Abstract

In the paper, we present the results of quantitative research, the basic purpose of which was to examine the role of the counsellor in the transition of pupils from primary to secondary school. We were mainly interested in their competencies. The survey included 125 counsellors, representing 14.24 % of the total target population. The results of the research indicate that counsellors are well equipped with the knowledge needed to guide pupils from primary to secondary school. However, there are certain shortcomings in the content knowledge and in the preparation of career guidance materials, as well as in the knowledge that is based on the discovery or recognition of student potential. Competencies based on the knowledge of
enrolment procedures in secondary schools and on the formal course of education, along with advisory skills aimed at identifying an individual’s greatest potential, have proved to be the most important.
