Abstract

Health literacy has become an integral part of functional literacy and a measure of human capital development in a particular country. Health literacy among secondary school students is particularly important because they are at high risk for health problems. Because the existing studies on health literacy have been conducted primarily in the United States and Western Europe, there is a research gap in the field of comprehensive studies of health literacy in Central and Eastern European countries. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the level of health literacy of Slovenian secondary school students using a quantitative, descriptive method. The questionnaire measuring the level of basic, numerical, critical and mental health literacy was completed by 249 Slovenian secondary school students, who were divided into two groups, namely of students
attending the nursing programme and others. The results showed that nursing students have statistically significantly higher levels of basic and mental health literacy than their peers, but not of numerical and critical health literacy. Both aspects of health literacy should be systematically developed, and at least the basic aspects of health literacy should be introduced in all secondary school curricula.
