The Role of Intergenerational Learning for Young People’s Transition to the Workplace in Kindergarten

Demographic change is reflected in all arrangements and systems, including education. The aim of this paper is to analyse the perception of the transition of newcomers to the workplace among different generations of kindergarten practitioners, and to illustrate the role of intergenerational learning in this context. Using a sample of 57 employees (27 teachers, 30 assistant teachers), we aim to find out whether there are any differences in the perceived need for strategic planning of intergenerational learning between employees according to their seniority; which factors are identified by the employees in the selected kindergarten as having an impact on facilitating the transition of newcomers to the workplace; and how multigenerational professional teams respond to the expectations and difficulties in the transition to the workplace. A mixed-methods approach was used in the research. We found that newcomers and older employees perceive similar difficulties (lack of specific skills) and advantages (cooperation and knowledge sharing) in the newcomers’ transition to the workplace. They both highlight similar factors, such as mutual respect, understanding, and acceptance, as influencing the ease of the transition to the workplace and intergenerational cooperation.
