Research on/with Children: Question of Participatory Research with Children
Keywords:
participatory research, data collection techniques, research paradigmAbstract
The paper focuses on the issue of participatory research with children, i.e. research with an active involvement of children. The basic starting points and ideas for this kind of research are presented along with a reflection on the ethical aspect of involving children in research. The core part of the paper focuses on data collection techniques that enable the children to be active participants in the research: creative techniques (e.g. telling stories, drawings, photographs) as well as the techniques with a long tradition in research (e.g. observation, interview). The discussion concludes with a few critical views of this kind of research with the attempt of embedding it in the context of a decision on an appropriate research paradigm, data collection techniques, data processing methods and the question of presenting the results.
