Abstract

We live in multicultural societies, where we expect that even in rural areas school classes will no longer be culturally homogeneous (Neuner, 2001, p. 13). For that reason, learning about different cultures and cultural diversity is a vital part of the education system. The purpose of this paper is to analyse teachers’ attitudes towards multicultural education. Differences in teachers’ opinions were analysed based on sex, length of employment, and the school subject they teach. A quantitative study method, i.e., an online survey, was used. Teachers received the online survey by e-mail and through Facebook. The study sample consists of 181 respondents. Teachers have positive attitudes towards multiculturalism, which is most evident among teachers of social sciences. The most negative attitudes are expressed by science teachers, who are most keen on assimilation.
The attitudes of male and female participants do not differ based on their gender. The sample of teachers is not representative; however, the results give us an insight into teachers’ attitudes towards multiculturalism.
