Presenting and Analyzing the Academic Service Learning Model
Keywords:
academic service learning, third mission of universities, experiential learningAbstract
In literature, the concept of academic service learning is accessed multilaterally, from defining it as a teaching method to definitions which academic service learning consider as movement for social change. The aim of this paper is, due to increasing needs of opening universities towards communities, to present academic service learning. This model originates in America, and there has the widest use, but lately, it is increasingly studied in the framework of European projects about the third mission of universities (Europe Engage, European Indicators and Ranking Methodology for University Third Mission), more precisely, its civic dimension. As one of the tasks of the paper, we emphasize the theoretical basis of academic service learning most often associated with Dewey’s experiential learning, Frerire’s critical pedagogy, and Kolb’s cycle of experiential learning as theoretical underpinnings. It can be concluded that a wider application of this model would require a number of changes within our higher education, but it is possible to notice the increasing growing emphasis on and promotion of academic service-learning at the European level.
