Asking questions in the learning process contributes to implementing modern, studentcentred approaches. The present paper deals with teachers asking questions to encourage student engagement and is based on our own research, which examines both how frequently higher education teachers ask students different questions and how often students have the opportunity to ask questions in the classroom. We were interested in students’ perceptions. The research was conducted among 231 students attending the Faculty of Education at the University of Maribor. Students report that they are frequently asked different questions by their teachers, but more often at lower cognitive levels. According to the results, teachers also give students the opportunity to ask questions themselves. As students will integrate the knowledge and experience obtained during their education into their teaching, viewing higher education teachers as role models, the findings of our research can serve as a basis for higher education teachers to self-evaluate their own teaching work.
